Overview: When this place was recommended to me by K. Peemapat (thx), I thought that the name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Turns out that it is a sister joint of AMP Saloon located somewhere on or near Ramkamhang Road (which I have not yet been to) – and this came to light when I was sitting there and saw a sticker with that name on it.

Anyway, this smallish place is located a short walk from Ari BTS station, easy enough to get to. They offer both outside and inside seating, but if you sit outside you should be prepared to put up with the exhaust and noise from passing traffic. The decor is a bit all over the place, literally and figuratively speaking – the gun magazines and rubber duck come to mind. The menu is quite straightforward and has a nice selection of burgers (choice of beef or pork) as well as a fish burger and fish&chips. I kept it simple and ordered a cheeseburger with a side of onion rings.

Cheeseburger: THB 130- (US $4.34)

“150g ground rib-eye patty, lettuce, cheese, mustard and BBQ sauce on a bun.”

AMP Burger and Bar CheeseburgerThe best part of this meal for me was the onion rings; this is not to say that the burger wasn’t good, but it wasn’t incredible. I thought the patty had decent flavor and was cooked nicely (med) – which deserves a bit of credit considering the patty was thin (which usually translates into a well-done burger). And it didn’t have any of those fillers that are a bane to burger enthusiasts around the world; but at the end of the day, I just didn’t get that wow factor from it as burger. The bun was fresh but was toasted too much; the bottom was dried out and was actually crunchy, I could snap parts of it off with my fingers. I think this sort of thing could work in some instances, but not this one. I also thought there was too much sauce on the burger, it overpowered the meat taste. As I mentioned earlier, I liked the onion rings – the first one was the best one. Although the more I ate the greasier they got, they did stay crispy! No one likes a soggy onion ring, right? (Well, at least not me.) The Verdict: I’m all for supporting new, small-time burger joints – if you’re in the area, you should give it a try. And at 11o THB for a hamburger, while it might not be the best burger in Bangkok, it’s still a pretty good deal.

Overview: In a city where a mentality of “close enough is good enough” dominates much of the time, I was delighted to find that this was not the case for Buddy Boys’ Diner (recommended to me by Yoo – who’s proving to be a seemingly endless source of burger joints). While I’m no expert on 1950s style diners, I can at least appreciate a solid effort in the recreation of one.

The diner is set back from the main road, almost out of sight … making it a bit hard to find but also transposing it into a world of its own – at least it seemed that way for me when I went at night … the surroundings were barely noticeable.  From the minute I walk up and into this place, I felt like I had taken a small step back in time. Aside from the LCD TV on hanging on the wall and a cover of Rhinestone Cowboy playing over radio, everything seemed to be in order – from the checkered floor to the vinyl covered benches. If I were to rate this on atmosphere alone, I’d give it a 9! The menu was simple pretty much stayed true to your basic diner foods. I ordered their signature burger and a root beer float  (how could I resist).

Buddy Boys’ Burger: THB 290- (US $9.66)

“200g beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, egg, special sauce and American cheese on a homemade bun.

Buddy Boys Burger, Buddy Boy Diner BangkokAt 200g, this is a pretty big burger (option of beef or pork); so I suggest you go with an appetite. The patty is made with local Thai-French beef and seemed to be of good quality. Seasoning was ok with a definite ground pepper presence – but not overpowering. The consistency of the patty was a bit soft for me, and I’m guessing they are using some bread-based filler. That said, I think it was minimal as the patty was nowhere near what you’d call “mushy.” Overall, I thought the burger had good flavor but was a tad greasy. I suppose its greasiness lends to the overall diner experience, no? The homemade bun was a nice touch and nice departure from the standard sesame seed bun. The special sauce seemed to be a variation of tartar sauce, and went well with the burger. My favorite thing I had was the root beer float – I genuinely love the crystallized root beer on the ice cream ball! The Verdict: Although this place is a bit of hike, I definitely recommend checking it out … not just for the ok burgers, but for a fun, well executed concept. They might not have the best burgers in Bangkok, but they’re a clear winner for best 1950s diner!

Rating: 6.5/10

Overview: Wandering through Central Chitlom, I came across this place, and from the sound of the name, I didn’t really expect them to have a burger … but they did. I think The Catch Interior - Bangkokthere once was some sort of steak/grill place here … and that was really what I was looking for. I can’t remember who at the moment, but someone had once told me they had a decent burger at that place. Anyway, located in the back of the supermarket area in the mini food court, you can either sit at the bar or at one of a few tables. I ordered up the burger and waited.

Juicy Imported Beef Burger: THB 229- (US $7.63)

“150g Aus. beef patty, sautéed onion and mushrooms on a fresh roll.

The Catch BurgerI ate this burger a few days ago, and there was something about how they cooked it that I just can’t get out of my head.  Imagine watching a cook take a fresh beef patty, place it on the grill, cook it to perfection and then take it off the grill only to put it in the microwave — that’s how they cook the burgers here. They did it for mine and also for another guy who ordered right after me. I asked them why they were microwaving it, and the guy said something along the lines of it wasn’t done and they only do it for a short time. Ok, so why not just leave it on the grill? It was strange, and worst of all this little action literally extracted all the juices from the burger; when they took it out of the microwave, all that was left was a sad-looking beef patty sitting in a puddle of its juices. What a shame too, as I thought the seasoning was pretty good. They use a fresh bun which they get from the bakery which is about 20 meters away. The type of bun used is The Catch Burger Cutquite hard, but I liked it. With a bit of burger juice, it would possibly soften up a bit and make it even better. The grilled onions were fine but weren’t fresh – simply reheated. Not an issue though. Mushrooms were also supposed to come on the burger, but since I’m not a huge fan of them, I had them leave them off. Fries were fine; I ate one. The Verdict: The name of this burger is sort of a bad joke … the word juicy should not be used when describing it … it’s not going to fool anyone! And although it wasn’t bad, a microwaved burger will probably never be the best Burger in Bangkok.
