Overview: It’s been awhile since I last posted, but don’t think that I’ve given up burgers. I’ve simply fit in a couple repeat visits to some other local burger joints. I have, however, started to get up early a few times each week to go for run … I want only want to eat burgers, not look like one (fat and juicy). It might be a good strategy, 5k run for every burger I want to eat?!

Anyway, so for this burger visit, I found myself wandering down Soi 4 on the recommendation/comment of a reader. If I wasn’t on a mission to eat a burger at this particular place, I’m pretty sure I could find 10+ other burger joints just in this soi alone … another day perhaps. So I strolled up and into Hanrahans, grabbed a booth in the back and ordered a burger. On their website, it says they occupy 3 floors, but I didn’t make it past the first one. There was some guy singing when I was there … although his voice wan’t that bad, he started and stopped at least 2-3 songs when I was there as a result of not remembering the words. Anyway, back to the burger …

“Thai beef patty, lettuce, tomato and onion on a lightly toasted sesame seed bun.”

Hanrahans Bangkok HamburgerI suppose I should count myself lucky, a majority of my recent burger encounters have been pretty good. This past one include. Although I wasn’t blown away by the hamburger … it didn’t make me grunt with satisfaction; it didn’t make me gag either, and for that I can be grateful. So here’s the beef on this burger: nicely charred, good seasoning, slightly over-cooked (ordered Med, came MedWell), a tad dry, a bit of gristle, a little too much bun. Visually, I didn’t like the hole in the center of the patty, but I know I’m not judging a beauty contest here. I figure the hole was put there so they could check the doneness, but as a result I think some of the nice burger juices snuck out. Fries were fine and veggies were fresh. On thing I did like about this place was that they offered creamy horseradish sauce in their bucket of condiments! Big plus. The Verdict: Decent burger, but not the best burger in Bangkok.

Overview: This recently opened sports bar sits smack dab in the middle of the city … located right under the Nana BTS Station. The place has both indoor and outdoor seating and loads of TVs (big and small) with the latest sporting events being shown. Upstairs there is a dart board and a pool table.

I went in sometime early evening late in the week, and the place had quite a few people … some drinking, some eating, some guys playing pool and some girls playing the field. Everyone seemed happy. I was looking forward to checking this place out … I claimed a seat and browsed over the menu. There are/were quite a few different burgers to choose from, but being the simple guy that I am, I went for the plain beef burger.

Beef Burger: THB 245- (US $8.17)

“180g beef patty, lettuce, tomato and red onion a lightly toasted sesame seed bun.

The Game Hamburger - BangkokFrom what I understand, the chef here has worked at a couple other burger joints in town, so I was eager to experience his burger here (although he wasn’t cooking when I stopped by), and for the most part, I wasn’t let down. It was a good one. It was a simple burger … just the way I like it (almost). Two things stuck out: 1: I ordered my burger medium and it came well, and 2: the bottom part of the bun was a bit doughy – like stick to the roof of my mouth doughy. Really, neither of these will deter me from going back … truth be told, I’m just getting pickier. That said, in defense of the bun, I thought it was otherwise quite nice – soft, fresh and most importantly not too dense. The patty itself seemed to be made of good quality beef, no gristle or bone, and was formed nicely as well (again, not too dense). If burgers don’t come with ketchup on them, I typically don’t add it … so I could have also done with a bit more salt in the mix. Anyway, enough nitpicking. At 180g, it’s a nice sized burger. The veggies were fresh and the fries were fine – standard crinkle cut. The Verdict: Maybe not the best burger in Bangkok, but worth a try if you’re in the area.
