The other day I had to go out to Srinakarin (near Seacon Square) for work, and since I typically don’t find myself in this area, I figured I’d make the best of it and see if I could find a burger. As luck would have it, as soon as I turned into the soi, I came across this place: Meat & Greet Burger. If that name doesn’t say come on in and eat me, I’m not sure what does.

So here I was just in front of Talad Rot Fai (Train market) about to have a burger. Originally this market was located near JJ market, but it was moved awhile back out to this area. Anyway, it’s a pretty cool market if you’ve never visited it. I would recommend it. Ok back to the beef. The restaurant is pretty small, but seemed clean and comfortable. I was only guest at the time, so I had the place to myself … which also meant fast, efficient service.

Cheese Burger – THB 169.- (Apx. US $5.63)

“Beef patty, lettuce, tomato and cheese on a bun.”

Meat and Greet Burger BangkokIf I had to be quite honest, there’s not really much to say about this burger. Overall, I thought it was ok, but I didn’t find myself making that “mmmmmmmm” sound as I consumed the burger. I felt the flavor was ok, but probably a bit on the salty side. Also, they do not give the option of cooking how you like; I tried to order medium but was told only one way. Fair enough, sometimes less choice is better. I think that I also found a bit (a small chunk) of filler (bread crumbs) in the patty – which is too bad. I like idea of all-beef patties. Anyway, one thing I did like was that the cheese pretty much fused the patty to the top half of the bun. I don’t really know why I like this, it didn’t do anything flavorwise for the burger, but I guess everyone has their quirks.

I should mention that I did like the bun.  It was quite soft and actually reminded me of Wonder bread. Lettuce & tomato, nothing to mention here. Now, the burger also comes with fries … they seem to have been seasoned with salt and parsley – I had or two (trying to choose my calories a bit better), they were ok, and they looked pretty good. So, all-in-all, burger was ok and I get to check one more place off of my burger list!

Mother Trucker Burger Bangkok

Food trucks, food trucks, food trucks … to be honest, I’m not sure how or why these seem to be such a novel idea in Bangkok … I mean there is no shortage of “mobile” food options around the capital: from food carts to food bikes to food boats … they are really everywhere. Anyways, it looks like the food truck has made it, at least for the time being … and for us burger fans, this has been good news. Which brings me to the point of this post .. Mother Trucker, a new(ish) burger truck that has been generating a bit of buzz among some crowds.

It’s not super convenient to get to, especially if you have to fight the Bangkok traffic, but it’s worth the effort if you’re looking to try something new. This truck can most often be found parked in the middle of a small soi around Kaosarn Road. I’ll post small map below for you guys to use as a guide if you want wander over (be sure to check their FB page updates though) and as of this posting there are only there some days after 6 pm. For you non-beef eaters, they also have a pork option … but this blog is all about the beef, so that’s what I had.

Beef Burger – THB 119.- (Apx. US $4.00)

“150g beef patty, onion ring, home-made 6,900 island sauce, and arugula on a home-made bun”

Mother Trucker_Burger Bangkok_2Let’s first start with some good things. 1. The bun was nice and fresh. It was homemade, and the one I had wasn’t too dense or doughy. 2. The onion ring topping. I thought in this case it was a nice addition, not just a gimmick. It added a nice crunchy texture to the burger when eating it, which I liked. Now on to the patty. Size and texture were good. By the photo, it might look a bit disproportionate – patty to bun (and ring) ratio, but it worked. However, the flavor of the patty was a bit over seasoned for my liking … salty and slightly dry – and herein lies the problem. Let me explain … I had ordered my burger medium (which they said I could) … but it came well-done, which meant that a lot of the moisture and burger juices had evaporated and went to burger heaven by the time I was served. Now, I’m not picking on them serving my burger to me well-done when I ordered medium; to their defense, they were very busy and I’m sure it was just a little miscommunication … I bring it up because I think it would have made a big difference in how I enjoyed the burger.

Combine the well-done, (salty) patty, with a fried onion ring and the bun … and if that doesn’t leave you thirsty, more power to you. There was a bit of arugula on the burger, but I think it was just for the sake of it. Not sure I would have even noticed it if I didn’t know it was there. For me, for this type of burger, at medium, it would have been moister, juicier … and this would have probably helped my “dry” impression of it. Overall, I enjoyed it, but wasn’t blown away. I’m glad that I made my way over to try it. I was impressed by the owners’ enthusiasm and even the burgers to a certain degree – I could see they cared, and this comes out in the food. When I was there, it was pretty busy, and everyone seemed quite satisfied with their food. Oddly enough, the number of girls outweighed the number of guys … so single male burger lovers, this might be a hot spot for you! Anyway, FYI I was quoted an apx 20 min. wait after I ordered … it turned out to be more like 40-45, so keep that in mind if time is tight for you.

Hamburgler Shout-Out: Emack & Bolio’s

Emack and Bolios Bangkok Grasshopper Pie Scoop

Emack and Bolios Bangkok LogoCentralWorld Mall (6th floor), Website: here

I guess you can gather by now, that this is not a post on burgers. I know, I’m swaying from my years and years of sticking to burger topics only … and don’t worry, I won’t make a habit of it — this is a special Hamburgler Shout-out. The truth is about a month ago I received an email from one of the owners … he’s been following my blog for a long time now and he just wanted to let me know that their shop was opening and bringing in some really good ice cream. So, to make a short story even shorter, I was at CentralWorld the other day, so I decided to check it out. I figured he supports my blog, and I’d go and buy a scoop and support small business … and the best part of it all is that I actually love ice cream, so it wasn’t really a chore for me.

So here’s  basic rundown of Emack & Bolio’s Bangkok. According to Wikipedia, the shops opened here are the first ones outside of the states, so I guess we should feel special. It’s a U.S. ice cream company out of Boston, MA and you can read more about it on their website. Anyway, I had scoop of Grasshopper Pie, which consists of mint ice cream, chocolate chips Emack and Bolios Bangkok Grasshopper Pie Scoopand Oreo cookie chunks – it really was great. Also, I had a sample bite of “Cake Batter”  and “Deep Purple Cow” – when I go back, I’m going to go for the cake batter. But, I’m not sure a burger and ice cream diet would be a good one … or I should say a healthy one, so I will try to balance it out a bit. Anyways, there were 3 things that I liked: 1. The ice cream wasn’t too sweet. I know this is a subjective observation, but I thought this was quite amazing considering the goodies mixed into the the actual ice cream. 2. It wasn’t too heavy or rich. and 3. The serving was pretty big. For what I spent, I really thought that it was worth it – I think it was something like THB 120.- for cup or cone.

So, if you’re at the mall and looking for treat, head up to the 6th floor and look out for this place. The kids would love it; they have a lot of fun flavors and cones dipped in rice crispy treats and fruit loops, etc.
