From what I gather, this is Thailand’s first branch (owned locally) of a brand that was started in Shanghai. I don’t really know much more than this, but if you want more details, I’m sure a quick google search will sort you out. Bottom line is that it started in China and is now here (much like a lot of our electronics, clothing, food… and possibly some of your family members).

Anyways, I’m going to try and keep this one short and sweet. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There are high ceilings and plenty of natural light. Most importantly, they have burgers … and that’s just what I ordered.

The Bacon Cheese: THB 400.++ (Apx. U.S. $13.33)

New York Style Steak and Burger_The Bacon Cheese BurgerI’ll just out and say it. This is a solid burger. It’s big. It’s juicy. And it’s pretty much all about the beef. Simple salt and pepper seasoning and that’s it. And that’s really all a good burger needs. I don’t mind other types of seasonings on burgers, but there are those places that overdo it in their attempt to create their “signature” burgers with some sort of secret recipe/burger blend… blah, blah, blah. You know what the real secret is? Keep it simple. Good meat. Good grind. And simple, but sufficient, seasoning. Anyways, I ordered my burger medium and that’s what I got. It had a nice, meaty juicy taste to it – with definite bursts of salty goodness. Consistency of patty was good with not gristle or sinew. Toppings were good; no complaints here. On an average day, it would be hard to find fault with bacon and cheese … throw that on a good patty and it’s almost impossible. I liked the raw white onions on this burger. They added a little bite that would have been missing if they had been sautéed/grilled. The burger also came with a home-made pickle – which I probably wouldn’t have even noticed if I hadn’t known it was there.

My only complaint … and it’s not really even a complaint, more of an observation, is that the bottom half of my bun got soggy quite quickly. It sucked up a bunch of burger juice even before it reached me and started to saturate parts of the bun. I’m not really sure how they would resolve this … toast the bun? Rest the burger longer? Maybe I need to eat faster?? Who knows, but let’s not dwell on that. Overall the bun was ok – it was fresh and soft. The tin of fries it comes with is a bit misleading, it looks like you have too many to deal with, but in reality they are propped up with the paper – so, it is turns out to be about 1/2 as many as it looks like. Which, in the end, is likely a good thing – there are plenty anyways. Bottom line, I enjoyed my burger. I say if you’re in the area, check it out. I went durning the lunch hour, it was very quiet in there … and I loved it. It was like I booked the whole place out for a 20-minute “stuff my face silly” fest with no one around to judge me.

Well, that’s it! Let us know what you think of this place or if you found what you think to be one of the best burgers in Bangkok,  please share with us on the BBB Facebook page!

When I think of New Zealand, I typically don’t think of food. I think of sheep. Don’ t worry, no sheep jokes. The truth is, I don’t know much about New Zealand other than that everyone I have ever met from there has been pretty nice. I worked a number of years teach swimming and running a waterfront at a summer camp in upstate New York. Each year there’d be a 2-3 Kiwis working with there, either  on the waterfront with me or running the ropes course. Fun guys and girls, heavy drinkers and good friends. Anyway, the first Kiwi I ever met had a black eye and few bruises on his face. When I asked him what had happened, he sort of laughed and said that his friends had a going away party for him … so, note to self, don’t have a going away party in New Zealand.

Anyway, so that first bit really has no purpose on a burger blog, other than the fact that perhaps a good burger is a like a good memory … hard to forget.  On that note, I’ll get on with it. I really liked the space here. The restaurant, in my non-expert opinion, is well-designed. It has both indoor and outdoor seating and there’s enough room so you do not feel like you’re sitting on top on one another. It wasn’t too hot on the day I went, so I ordered my burger and claimed a seat outside.

Kiwi Burger: THB 490.- (apx US $16.33++)

“180g NZ Prime Beef, lettuce, tomato, bacon, sautéed onions, beetroot, cheese, fried egg, homemade tomato sauce, and mayo served on a homemade bun”

Kai New Zealand Kiwi Burger BangkokWith a 180g patty, this was a pretty sizable burger. I could imagine some members of the All Blacks downing a couple of these in one sitting – but I was content with just one. For the patty, I thought that the flavor was ok, but it did come across as a bit dry – I was missing the juicy, savory goodness. I also felt that the grid was much too fine. While it wasn’t bad, it did have a slightly grainy texture on the pallet. The toppings were all nice and fresh – I had mine without the egg, but I’m sure that would have added another creamy element to the burger. I particularly liked the homemade tomato sauce and sautéed onions; they addend a nice sweet & tart flavor combination to mix – and as always, you can never go wrong with bacon. The beetroot was ok,  but in the future, I think I will opt for a burger without it. The bun was a bit dense for my liking – maybe a little toast would have soften it up on the inside a bit. But I understand, big burgers need sturdy buns. This one held up and wasn’t soggy – and that is a plus in my book. I enjoyed the fries that came with the burger; crisp on the outside and soft & fluff on the inside. They went really well with the homemade tomato sauce.

Overall, this was an ok burger, but not the best in Bangkok – at least not for me. It was better than the last place I visited, and I really liked the restaurant/atmosphere. It was comfy casual. I will definitely go back and check out some of their other items. They consistently get good reviews of their food (both here and at Snapper, their other place) – so I think it’s worth checking out if you’re in the area. One of the staff told me that the most popular items are the seafood selections as well as grill options.

Side note: I thought that the staff (one waitress in particular) was exceptional. She was friendly and professional and had that casual familiarity that you don’t typically find in restaurants in Bangkok. While no one checked on me when I was eating, the interaction both before and after my meal was very positive. Good job.

I was in the mood for a burger and it was nearly lunch hour, so I figured I’d find a place close to my office. I did a quick google search and somewhere along the way I came across Dexter on Sathorn Soi 8. I had a quick look on their FB page, saw they had a burger (and coffee) and I was sold.

My first impression of the place was good – it was airy and clean. It seemed like a place I’d be happy to spend a morning or afternoon sipping a coffee with a good book or mindless iPhone game. The staff were also friendly and polite. Anyways, let’s get on with it…

Beef Burger: THB 298.- (Apx. U.S. $ 9.93)

“Juicy minced beef topped with cheese, bacon & homed dressing, served on fresh grilled bun”

Dexter Bangkok Beef burgerI’ll be quite honest with you, this was one of my least favorite burgers in a very long time. I did not expect to or really want to write a negative review of this place … especially since I was convinced I was going to have a good experience. You can take a quick look at their Trip Advisor page and see mostly glowing reviews  (although a majority by first or 2nd time reviewers)… anyway, there are a number of positive comments about the burgers, so to each is own. But, it is what is … or it is what it was. And for me, it was not enjoyable. The burger arrived and it looked pretty good. With a 150g beef patty, it was of good size. First bite was a bad one – big chunk of gristle and unfortunately for the patty, this was the theme for pretty much each subsequent bite. I’m including a couple of photos to show I’m not making this up (you can see in the 1/2 cut and close-up.  That said, this issue is more about meat prep than of quality. A little more care would eliminate this problem altogether, and make a huge difference. It is possible that this was just a bad day for a burger here.

The patty was also a tad on the dense side and the grind was a bit thicker than your typical burger. I didn’t have a problem with the grind; I actually prefer my burgers to have a bit more texture to them. The seasoning was light/unnoticeable – nothing stood out to me in that regard. Aside from what they listed in the description, the burger also comes dressed with lettuce, red onions, cucumbers and gherkins. All fine, although personal preference would be to leave the cucumbers off. They didn’t really add to the flavor profile of the burger and for texture we already had the gherkins, red onion and lettuce. Their special dressing was ok, but there was way too much on my burger – less 50% would have been good. Finally, the bun. I liked it. Nothing else to say about that. The burger comes with a side of seasoned fries – so if you just have to have fries with your burger, you’re covered. All in all, this burger was not the best burger in Bangkok, and I will not order it again. At the end of the day, I’d visit Dexter’s again just for a burger. I liked the atmosphere and those around me seemed to be enjoying their dishes… next time I’ll start with a coffee and work from there.

As always, if you’ve tried the burger here or another place, let us know about your experience on our FB page! Until next time … burger on!
