Have you ever met a girl (or guy) that checked all of your must have boxes – looks, substance, qualities, etc… but in the end, no matter how much you knew you should love her (him)… or maybe not love, but at least more than “like” her … you just didn’t feel it. That’s how I felt about this burger. It was one of those “It’s not you, it’s me” moments. I liked it, but didn’t “like, liked” it. But just because I didn’t fall in love, doesn’t mean you won’t. So here it is…

Jamie’s Burger (THB 299.-)

100g patty (Thai-Aussie beef), bacon, (processed) cheddar cheese, jalapeños, caramelized onions and homemade tomato mayo

Sorry, no top shot of the burger this time… between the cheese and the tomato mayo/onion mix, I wasn’t in the mood to make a mess. That said, it was cooked fine and seasoned ok. Ground pepper stood out, but wasn’t overpowering. Beef quality seemed good. No issue with grind size, texture or gristle.  The thing that stood out the most was the bacon….it was very crispy… and I know that there are a few of you “god-dammit, why can’t anyone make the bacon crispy” guys out there… and if you are one of them, this might be for you. Burgers are available in beef or pork, and with the option I picked, you get your choice of fries or side salad. I went with the salad… but it wasn’t anything special. Just lettuce and lots and lots of dressing. A tomato wedge and a couple pieces of onion would go a long way here… just saying.

Anyways, this place along with Arno’s, seem to making big expansion moves… Jamie’s has about 4 spots now I think. I’m sure some of you have tried it, so please let us know what you think on the BBB Facebook page. Or let us know what you think is the Best Burger in Bangkok.

Yummy (2017)

Yummy Corner Cheeseburger Cut

YummyCorner ExteriorSukhumvit 49 (20 meters to the right from Villa 49), Open: 8.30-7.00pm daily.

I’ve been passing this shop for some time, but I’ve been hesitant to try a place called “Yummy”…. I don’t know why, but for some reason I didn’t believe they could live up to their name. That said, they have some burgers (both beef and pork) – so I knew I would pop in sooner or later. It’s been on my mind for the past month, and I finally got around to it. They also have pancakes, tacos, taco salad, chicken fingers, club sandwich and hotdogs, etc… really a kids’ dream restaurant. And in the end, this all makes sense as it turns out this place is affiliated with the nearby American School of Bangkok – which I’m sure the kids love.

With a name like “Yummy Burger” I was expecting it to be a huge fail, but it turns out that I pleasantly surprised (and again, knowing it is connected to ASB – maybe the name “yummy burger isn’t so bad considering their clientele. I’m almost embarrassed to say so, but I liked this burger. It was everything a burger is supposed to be: simple, tasty and affordable. I would liken it to a cleaner version of a  truckstop burger in the US. It was just the right amount of greasy. They are using Thai/French beef, but I think they must  be making their own patties as the fat content seems higher than what you would get from the meat counter in Villa. Doesn’t seem to have any fillers and they are light on the seasoning. Buns come from Villa, but buttered and toasted… no problems here.Veggies were clean and fresh.

And since I was there… I also had a “cheeseburger taco” – I liked this as much as the burger – maybe even more as they use real cheddar instead of the slice of American… and the burger patty is the same.

At the end of the day, it’s missing that “something special” to make it the “best” burger in Bangkok… but for what it is, it’s worth trying, and since it’s in my “hood” – I imagine I’ll be stopping by from time to time.

Parking: Possibly paid parking at the hotel next door (or access via BTS Chong Nongsi)

This burger joint has been open for about 1.5 years, but I haven’t really heard much about it. That said, a quick google search comes up with some pretty good reviews. It is relatively near my office (Rama 4) so I figured I’d pop on down for a quick lunch. I should note, for you veggie lovers, they have some mushroom burger options as well as pork if you are non-beef eaters.

Beef Burger (THB 219.-)

Apx 120g beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickle and special sauce on a toasted bun.

Cooking style: Griddle – Smash and Sear! choose your own doneness. *I went with medium. (was slightly over, but it’s fine)

Beef Shake Beef Burger

Unlike my last post where I liked the bun and was let down by the beef – this experience was almost opposite. On their menu, Burger & Shake notes they use Australian beef – I asked the guy behind the counter (possibly one of the owners??) Where the beef was from, he said it was Australian beef, but the cattle are raised here in Thailand. It’s cool. I like that they are thinking local, while also thinking about serving better quality beef.

Beef Shake Beef PattyFor me, it comes across. Tastewise, I liked this patty, light on the seasoning and clear beef taste. The grind consistency was good as well. It comes across as lean, not dripping with fat, and burger juices weren’t oozing out – but it was moist and not watery tasking like the burger I had here. They smash and sear their burgers here – so there was a some crust, bu t it wasn’t super noticeable in terms of adding taste.

The only thing I did not like about this burger was the bun. Really didn’t like it. Standing alone it probably would have been ok, but for this burger, not so much. I wish I could describe what I didn’t like about it, because just saying it was too soft and fluffy doesn’t really do  a good job… I’ve had burgers with soft and fluffy buns before and they were good. So, it’s about the real texture and I guess you’re just going to have to take this comment for what it is.

Side note, I had ordered the set that came with cheese fries… what a mess. It tasted ok, but there was more “special sauce” (something like 1000 island) than cheese. I don’t know why, but I was expecting some cheese whiz drenched French Fry goodness. Also, there were lots of caramelized onions buried under the cheese and sauce – I liked the onions, but if you are an onion hater… consider yourself warned. (Note: just got a message from the owner, apologizing and noting that I was served a different type of “new cheese fries” – not their old version which was out. So that explains that. So what you see and read above is not a description of their cheese fries.)
