We brought our daughter here for a little play session the other weekend; it’s good for kids and they have zones for toddlers as well as older kids. The indoor play area is quite nice, and if there’s not many kids, it’s even better. You can contact them for rates, but they have 3 hour and full day rates (cost varies depending on height of your child – adults are set price). Anyway, I saw a burger on the menu so I thought I would give it a try. So, let’s get to the beef…. here’s a hint: if you can picture the best burger in Bangkok… this would be the complete opposite.

Homemade Hamburger: THB 160.-

Beef patty, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and mayo on a lightly toasted bun – served with fries and shredded cabbage & carrots

I know it’s not really a burger place, but it is a bit comical – on the menu they say “homemade” burger… which means that someone actually went though some effort to actually create this!

Worst. Burger. Ever.

It doesn’t even look like beef?!  My next burger run is going to be somewhere good… I need to make up to my stomach for this one.

Also, a little side comment – do any other people here like cucumbers on burgers? Pickles I get, but cucumbers have always seemed a bit out of place on burgers… or is it just me?

I work in the area, so as soon as their signage popped up, I was quite excited for it to open… with a name like MeatChop I was convinced they would have a burger on the menu and my expectations were raised. That and knowing it was run by the same team doing bitterman (another neighborhood restaurant with pretty good food) – I was looking forward to checking it out.

From what I could see, there was only 1 burger on the menu… it was this one. And by the name of it, it sounds like the burger option changes on a monthly basis.

Anyway, I ordered my burger medium and it came rare… really, really rare. Mine was the only burger/meat on the grill…. All grilling credibility went out the door… well, not really, but seriously, seems like this shouldn’t happen in a meat-centric place like this. But to be fair, maybe we just chalk it up to just opening kinks. Note: I did send it back – it was returned slightly more cooked, but that re-grilling process probably didn’t add to my overall experience – mainly because as the burger was cut, I’m sure some of the flavor came out… and the sauce that had been added earlier, was no longer that noticeable.

So all things considered, I didn’t find anything particularly special about this burger. The meat quality seemed up there, but the patty was overall quite soft. Part of this is probably due to it being undercooked.  I prefer a more hearty texture where you not only taste the beef, you can feel it!  The bun was a bit dry and bland – some butter or fat before bring grilled could have helped amp it up… also,  I like Jamon Iberico – I really do, brings me back to when I lived in Spain, but I don’t think it added anything to this burger at all. Maybe if it was fried – the crispiness could add a bit of texture to it, and it would be easier to bite through, instead of these large slices that pretty much end up in your mouth whole… point is, as it is just felt like it was an afterthought, tossed on top because it looked good.

At the end of the day, I will not go back for another burger (sorry MeatChop)… I think a better bet would be some of their steaks or even their pasta dishes (which got high praises from the two I ate with). *btw, the vinaigrette on my small salad was awesome – fruity, sweet and tangy.

Has anyone else tried this place yet? If so, let us know what you think  on our BBB Facebook page. Or if you’ve found any other burger places that you think serve the best burgers in Bangkok, do share.

Until then… Burger on!

Have you ever met a girl (or guy) that checked all of your must have boxes – looks, substance, qualities, etc… but in the end, no matter how much you knew you should love her (him)… or maybe not love, but at least more than “like” her … you just didn’t feel it. That’s how I felt about this burger. It was one of those “It’s not you, it’s me” moments. I liked it, but didn’t “like, liked” it. But just because I didn’t fall in love, doesn’t mean you won’t. So here it is…

Jamie’s Burger (THB 299.-)

100g patty (Thai-Aussie beef), bacon, (processed) cheddar cheese, jalapeños, caramelized onions and homemade tomato mayo

Sorry, no top shot of the burger this time… between the cheese and the tomato mayo/onion mix, I wasn’t in the mood to make a mess. That said, it was cooked fine and seasoned ok. Ground pepper stood out, but wasn’t overpowering. Beef quality seemed good. No issue with grind size, texture or gristle.  The thing that stood out the most was the bacon….it was very crispy… and I know that there are a few of you “god-dammit, why can’t anyone make the bacon crispy” guys out there… and if you are one of them, this might be for you. Burgers are available in beef or pork, and with the option I picked, you get your choice of fries or side salad. I went with the salad… but it wasn’t anything special. Just lettuce and lots and lots of dressing. A tomato wedge and a couple pieces of onion would go a long way here… just saying.

Anyways, this place along with Arno’s, seem to making big expansion moves… Jamie’s has about 4 spots now I think. I’m sure some of you have tried it, so please let us know what you think on the BBB Facebook page. Or let us know what you think is the Best Burger in Bangkok.
